About Us

Universitywide Coordination

In the fall 2022 senate address, President Holloway charged us with developing a coordinated and intentional approach to online education that complements what we do on the ground and more effectively meets the needs of current and future students.

This work was informed by an institution-wide effort in the spring of 2022, involving more than 300 faculty and staff from across the university, led by Brian Ballentine, senior vice president for strategy; Michele Norin, senior vice president and chief information officer; Prabhas Moghe, executive vice president for academic affairs; and their teams.

The spring study concluded that stronger coordination across the university would benefit our faculty, staff, and students. The study highlighted the need for more cohesive and targeted support for online education, and in response, the Council on Online Education was launched in Fall 2023. With guidance from the council and other stakeholders, the Office for University Online Education Services was created and launched on July 1, 2024.

Our primary focus is on supporting fully online degree programs and stand-alone, for-credit certificate programs across the university, working closely with academic units to ensure their success in the digital learning environment.

We provide comprehensive support to deans, department chairs, and program administrators, in developing, implementing, and maintaining high-quality online programs. Our team collaborates closely with unit-, school-, and program-based support service teams to ensure seamless integration and alignment with institutional goals.

Our range of specialized services includes instructional design, multimedia production, and exploration of emergent technologies. These services are designed to enhance program quality, improve student engagement, and support faculty in delivering exceptional online learning experiences.

We pride ourselves on our agility and commitment to continuous improvement, regularly adapting our services to meet the evolving needs of online programs at Rutgers. By leveraging cutting-edge tools, evidence-based practices, and our team's diverse expertise, we strive to position Rutgers' online offerings at the forefront of digital education.

The council is a standing advisory group charged with monitoring the current state and advising the future state of online education at Rutgers, and with enabling two-way communication and idea exchange with the academic units. The council, which meets regularly, includes representatives from each chancellor-led unit, a representative from the University Senate, and ex-officio representatives from University Academic Affairs and the Office of Information Technology.
