In this course, participants will learn the foundational skills needed to effectively utilize Canvas for online teaching. Topics covered include navigating Canvas, creating course content, managing assignments, and using Gradebook and Speedgrader, and managing course settings, rosters, and groups.
Online Teaching Essentials Series
The entire program is free and open to all Rutgers faculty, staff, and students. You can self-enroll, learn, and complete the series according to your schedule and needs. Earning a badge is optional; the resources in each course are here for you to explore and refer to at any time, right when you need them.

Level 1 Courses
This course focuses on strategies for creating accessible course content to ensure an inclusive online learning environment. Participants will learn about best practices for designing content that is usable by all students, including those with disabilities. The course covers techniques for creating accessible documents, videos, and images, as well as how to use the Ally accessibility checker to evaluate your course accessibility and set goals for improvement.
In this course, participants will explore the principles of learner-centered design for online courses. The course will delve into the unique needs of online learners and key principles of online learning, including the concept of Backward Design and strategies for managing cognitive load. Participants will also learn how to align course content with meaningful learning objectives and develop a course map to guide design and instruction.
Level 2 Badge: Proficiency
Once you have completed "Level 1: Foundations", you can then move on to earn your Online Teaching Proficiency badge by completing each of the three courses in Level 2.

Level 2 Courses
While Canvas has a robust set of native tools, it also allows for the incorporation of external applications or EdTech Tools into your course design. In this course we will take a learner-centered approach to identifying, evaluating and selecting the right tools to best meet your learning objectives while enhancing student engagement.
In this course, we challenge you to ask yourself what it means to teach in a culturally responsive way, and how we might design learning spaces and experiences that meet the needs of all learners. We will explore strategies for critical self-reflection and understanding how your positionality intersects with your presence as the instructor in your course. Through this course, you can learn practical ideas, strategies, and tips to make your classroom a place where all students are welcomed and empowered to succeed.
This course is intended to support a deeper dive into assessment planning and design and to prompt a more critical reflection on the role assessment plays in the courses you teach. You will learn ways to develop and implement an assessment plan that supports student performance while also improving your instructional effectiveness.
