Representation in Video Creation

The people, voices, examples, and perspectives we include in academic videos can shape how students see themselves in a course and within a field of study. As our classrooms become increasingly diverse, thoughtful representation can help create learning environments where more students feel recognized, included, and able to connect with course content. 
This workshop explores why representation matters in academic video and offers practical ways faculty can be more intentional about who and what appears on screen. We will consider representation across race, ethnicity, culture, language, socioeconomic background, disability, and other lived experiences, while also discussing how to broaden representation in ways that feel authentic and relevant. 

Workshop Format: 20-25 minute presentation with demo followed by 5–10 minute Q&A with an Instructional Designer and a Media Specialist
