At this year’s Rutgers Online Learning Conference, conversations around AI and emerging technologies took a big chunk of the stage as educators, instructional designers, and institutional leaders explored what this transformation means in practice. Through engaging presentations and open dialogue, participants examined both the possibilities and the complexities of integrating AI into academic environments. Rather than focusing solely on the technology itself, many sessions emphasized the human decisions that guide its use, by highlighting the importance of intentional, ethical, and pedagogically sound implementation.

Across the AI and Emerging Technology track, presenters showcased a wide range of applications already taking shape in higher education. Sessions explored how AI can support course design, personalize learning experiences, and streamline administrative processes, while also raising important questions around academic integrity, data privacy, accountability, and the evolving role of the instructor. These discussions reflected a shared understanding that while AI offers powerful tools, its impact ultimately depends on how thoughtfully it is applied within institutional contexts, and consequently, within the classroom.

As with the broader conference, the exchange of ideas was enriched by the diversity of voices in the room. Rutgers faculty and staff were joined by presenters and participants from institutions across the country, each contributing unique perspectives on how AI is being approached within their own environments. This collaborative space allowed for not only the sharing of innovations, but also honest conversations about uncertainty, experimentation, and the need for ongoing learning as the technology continues to evolve.

As we reflect on these discussions, one thing is clear: AI is not simply a trend, but a pivotal moment in the evolution of higher education. By bringing together those who are taking an active part in this shift, the Rutgers Online Learning Conference continues to serve as a space for critical dialogue, shared learning, and forward-thinking exploration.

We are grateful to all who contributed to these important conversations, and we look forward to continuing this work as we begin planning for the 2027 Rutgers Online Learning Conference.
