Fostering Self-Directed Learning with AI
A self-directed learner is a person who takes proactive ownership of their learning. They set their own goals, find appropriate resources, motivate themselves and reflect on their struggles and successes (Knowles, 1975). Usually, self-directed learners do not stop after passing a course or getting a degree; instead, they become lifelong learners, who have mastered their learning strategies.
There are many ways instructors can help students develop as self-directed learners. In this article, we focus on the use of Generative AI to facilitate students in building self-directed learning skills.
While students may use GenAI tools like Gemini, ChatGPT, Claude etc. for the purpose of summarizing reading material, AI tools are not limited to such tasks. When used purposefully, the same tools can serve as useful aids for guiding and organizing students’ learning processes, shifting the focus away from what to learn, and more toward how to learn.
Here are some examples of how you can incorporate Generative AI into your learning environment with the aim of encouraging self-directed learning. For all of these assignment prompts, you can ask students to use GenAI to develop the final product and share with you (and the class if you wish), the iterative process of tweaking and perfecting it according to their personalized needs.
Goal Setting - Ask learners to create realistic learning goals and study plans.
Example: "Create a four-week plan to learn terminology."
Time-Management - Help students organize study schedules, prioritize tasks, and set reminders.
Example: "Build a weekly study calendar around work and family commitments."
Reflection and Self-Assessment - Encourage learners to reflect on what they learned and identify any knowledge gaps.
Example: "Generate quizzes, flashcards, and practice questions to prepare for the exam"
Finding Resources - AI can recommend articles, videos, simulations, and practice activities based on the learner's needs.
Example: "Create beginner, intermediate, and advanced resources on your selected topic"
Critical Thinking & Creativity - Challenge learners by presenting multiple perspectives and asking probing questions. Also, they can use AI to assist with brainstorming, project design, and solving complex problems.
Example: "Generate research questions for a class project."
AI supports self-directed learning by acting as a personalized tutor, coach, and study partner. When used thoughtfully, it helps learners set goals, access resources, receive timely feedback, practice skills, and reflect on their progress. The most effective use of AI is not to do the student's learning for them, but to empower the student to become a more independent, confident, and lifelong learner.
